Early this morning, three of my colleagues visited Al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza’s largest medical complex, which has become central to the war between Israel and Hamas.
There, the Israeli military escorted them to a stone-and-concrete shaft with a staircase descending into the earth.
It was evidence, Israeli officials asserted, of a Hamas military facility under the hospital.
But it did offer my colleagues a rare opportunity to witness the wartime conditions inside Gaza City.
They drove into a neighborhood Patrick had visited a dozen times over the past three years, yet he could hardly recognize it.
